What is Defence Cyber Certification?
Defence Cyber Certification is a structured, risk-based certification scheme that assesses the cyber security posture of organisations working with, or intending to work with, the UK Ministry of Defence.
Unlike previous approaches that assessed cyber security on a per-contract basis, DCC provides a consistent and repeatable certification model, valid across multiple contracts and procurement processes.
This means once certified, your organisation can demonstrate compliance quickly and effectively when bidding for defence work.

DCC Certification Levels
Defence Cyber Certification is structured across four levels, based on the cyber risk associated with the work you undertake:
Level 0 – Basic cyber hygiene (low risk)
Level 1 – Foundational cyber security controls
Level 2 – Advanced security controls and oversight
Level 3 – High assurance, defence-grade cyber security
Each level builds on the previous, with Cyber Essentials forming the foundation, and higher levels requiring Cyber Essentials Plus certification.
The required level will typically be defined by the MOD based on the risk profile of your contract.
How the Certification Works
The DCC process involves a structured assessment of your organisation’s cyber security controls, policies, and practices against defined standards.
You will be required to:
Demonstrate how your organisation meets specific security controls
Provide evidence of implementation and effectiveness
Undergo assessment by an approved certification body
Maintain certification through annual reviews and re-certification every three years
