Rioja, which has denominación de origen calificada (D.O.Ca., "Qualified Designation of Origin," the top classification in Spanish wine legislation), is a wine area in Spain.
Grapes from the autonomous entities of La Rioja, Navarre, and the Basque province of lava are used to make Rioja wine.
The three zones of Rioja are Rioja Alta, Rioja Oriental, and Rioja Alavesa.
Traditionally, many wines have included grapes from all three zones, while single-zone wines are slowly becoming more popular.
Since its founding in 1925, the D.O.Ca. Rioja Regulating Council has authorised seven traditional varietals, four red and three white: Tempranillo, Garnacha tinta, Mazuelo (sometimes called Cariena), and Graciano are the red varietals.
Viura (also called Macabeo), Malvasa, and Garnacha blanca are the white types.
